DSC Symphony Orchestra opens season with Pine Valley Pops concert

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Paul Abegg, will open its 2010-11 season with its Second-Annual Pine Valley Pops Concert, performed at the Historic Pine Valley LDS Chapel on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. This special outdoor concert is free and open to the public to attend.

The orchestra’s program will have a patriotic theme, which includes John Philip Sousa’s Semper Fidelis and Stars and Stripes, the William Tell Overture, Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia, and Morton Gould’s American Salute.

Dr. Abegg noted that the Orchestra’s Pine Valley trip is intended to be a retreat as well as an outreach effort to communities in the St. George area. He added that his orchestra has continued to grow in size and quality, noting that his ensemble boasts some of the most talented musicians on campus who are preparing challenging and inspiring repertoires.

The growth of DSC Symphony Orchestra has led to a change of venue for the ensemble’s 2010-11 performance season, as the Orchestra will perform all four of its campus concerts in the spacious Avenna Center Cox Auditorium. In all, the DSC Symphony Orchestra will perform twice this semester, including its Fall concert on Saturday, Oct. 25, and the annual Christmas concert entitled “Sing Choirs of Angels,” which will be a two evening engagement with the Southern Utah Heritage Choir, on December 11-12.

The Orchestra will also perform a pair of concerts during the spring semester, beginning with a special Concerto Evening on Saturday, Feb. 26, and on Sunday, April 24, featuring guest violinist Misha Rosenker. The Orchestra will also perform during Dixie State’s Centennial Commencement Ceremonies slated for Friday, May 6, 2011.

All four orchestra concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets for each concert will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $1 for DSC students and faculty and staff with current ID.

For the third-straight season, Dixie State is offering a DSC Fine Arts Season Pass (excluding dance performances), giving patrons access to all DSC theatre productions, along with all instrumental and vocal concerts, for the 2010-11 season. The DSC Fine Arts Season Pass is available for $99 per patron, an $85 savings over the regular box office single-event ticket price. In addition, a season Music-Only pass may be purchased for $85, a savings of $65 over the regular box office single-event ticket price.

For tickets and further information, please call 435-652-7800 or visit the central campus ticket office at the DSC Avenna Center. Patrons may also purchase tickets prior to each evening’s performance at the Eccles Fine Arts Center Box Office or online at www.tickets.dixie.edu.
