Dig for the Cure a success

ST. GEORGE – At Snow Canyon High School, volleyball is an important part of life, but what took place there Thursday night was even more important. The Warriors hosted the Desert Hills Thunder and the theme for the night was “Dig for the Cure.” Pink was the color of choice for the fund raising opportunity. Both teams wore pink uniforms, the crowd was decked out in their best pink duds, even the referee used a pink whistle, all in support of breast cancer awareness.

Local businesses got in on the action, as well. Peppers Mexican restaurant donated menu items that were available for purchase during the night’s festivities. Little Caesars donated pizzas and the volleyball players made baked goods that were available for purchase with all proceeds going to Jubilee of Trees – which aids in local breast cancer awareness. Donation buckets were passed through the crowd and placed at each entrance. Total donations for this event exceeded $1,000.

Possibly the most stirring part of the evening was when players from each team were introduced, the public address announcer also announced the name of a cancer patient in which that girl would be playing on behalf of during the game. Each patient’s name was cheered warmly as the girls took the court.

On the court the action was fierce. The Desert Hills squad gave the Warriors all they could handle though they came out on the losing end 25-15, 25-20, 25-17. Snow Canyon captain Ciara Parker had 30 assists and 12 digs to lead her team. Stacey Benton added eight kills as the two teams begin to tune up for the state playoffs, which take place the first weekend of November.
