New artist-in-residence in Zion National Park

ZION NATIONAL PARK – Superintendent Jock Whitworth is pleased to announce Gloria Miller-Allen as the new Artist-in-Residence at Zion National Park. Gloria, a watercolor artist from Idaho Falls, Idaho, will spend a month in the park creating artwork inspired by Zion National Park.

Miller-Allen is a lifetime painter whose love of watercolors, starting in first grade, has grown into a full time occupation. She has worked with serigraphs, pastel, acrylic, mixed-media and even oils, but her main strength is pure classic watercolor. Miller-Allen’swork has been accepted in over 40 national and international exhibitions. She holds signature membership in the American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolors West, Northwest Watercolor Society and Knickerbocker Artist USA. She is an experienced instructor teaching beginners to advanced artists for over 15 years.

Artists, like Miller-Allen, have been an important part of the national park system for over a century. Zion National Park hopes to continue in this historic tradition by providing artists the chance to draw inspiration from the park’s sweeping landscapes through the Artist-in-Residence program.

The Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic splendor of Zion National Park. The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park. In addition, the program’s intent is to foster the connection between unspoiled natural settings and artistic pursuit. It is the park’s hope that works produced during this time will characterize Zion for present and future generations and offer park visitors and the general public the opportunity to see America’s heritage through the creative vision of contributing artists.

The Artist-in-Residence program is supported by Zion National Park, in partnership with the Zion Natural History Association and Southern Utah University’s College of Performing and Visual Arts.
