DSC Symphony Band opens campus holiday concert season with special engagement

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State College Symphony Band formally opens the slate of holiday concerts with a special concert event on Tuesday, November 30, at 7:30 p.m., in the Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSC campus.

The 74-piece symphony band is under the direction of longtime conductor Gary Caldwell, who is in his 32nd-year as director of bands at DSC. The symphony band will perform eight compositions, including three Christmas classics, beginning the Jan Van der Roost “Dynamica,” and “Scenes from the Louvre,” a score written b Norman Dello Joio taken from the 1964 NBC network television special on the Louvre gallery.

The band will also perform the “The White Rose, composed by Philip Sparke and commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band from Harrogate, England; along with the Bach classic “Aria;” followed by Alfred Reed’s “A Festive Overture,” which was commissioned by the Tri-State Festival, hosted by music department of Dickinson State (ND) College.  

The symphony band will conclude the evening with a trio of holiday favorites, beginning with Tchaikovsky’s “Suite from The Nutcracker,” and “The Polar Express,” based on the Chris Van Allsburg enchanting story, which was composed for the hit holiday movie by Alan Silvestri and arranged for band by Jerry Brubaker. The symphony band with conclude the evening with a performance of “A Christmas Festival,” a medley of Christmas favorites composed by Leroy Anderson, which encompasses the joy, celebration and solemnity of Christmas.
 
The DSC Symphony Band performs twice each semester, including a pair of concerts during the spring semester on Feb. 22, and April 19.

All remaining concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., in the Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. General admission tickets for each concert will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $1 for DSC students and faculty and staff with current ID.
