SGPD hosts 15th annual Citizen's Academy

ST. GEORGE – The St. George Police Department will be hosting the 15th session of the Citizen's Academy beginning this February.

The Citizen's Academy offers an in-depth view into the inner workings of the St. George Police Department.  Many ask questions about why police do what they do and how they do it. Can we really walk a fingerprint down the hall to the crime lab and come out with the suspect's name in 40 minutes, like they do in CSI? How do we investigate a death scene? How bad is the drug or gang problem in St. George?  Why don't we do DNA tests and just find out who the suspect is? Is it safe to send my child to school? These questions and more are answered in the Citizen's Academy.

There are presentations by the bicycle patrol, the motor squad and the school resource officers.  Investigations has expanded to 4 nights due to popular demands from past sessions. Did you know that we have a SWAT team and a bomb squad and that we have deployed them on a regular basis?  Did you know that we have a K-9 officer and that our drug dog has made some significant seizures in St. George?  There will be a dynamic building entry by the SWAT Team and the bomb squad will demonstrate how they blow up a suspected device, and this year for the first time, we have something new: a tour of Purgatory Correctional Facility.

As some of the presentations represent drugs, sex and violence, the Citizen's Academy is open to residents of St. George who are 18 years of age or older. This is for the citizens with a sincere desire to know more about the St. George Police Department and what is really happening in our area.  A limited background check will be done so that we don't enable the criminals by showing them our methods.  There are even opportunities to get involved by joining CERT or becoming a VIPS volunteer.

The Citizen's Academy will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 8 pm during February and March and is approximately 8 to 10 weeks in length.  The session will be strictly limited to 30 people so don't delay in getting registered for this session.

Applications can be requested by calling 435-627-4301 or coming to the police station at 265 N. 200 E. during business hours.  And best of all, it's free!  Come join us and see what we do for you and how we do it.  We look forward to seeing you.
