ST. GEORGE – On Jan. 5, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the St. George Police Department responded to the 300 East block of 1400 South on a reported vehicle theft call. A white 2007 GMC Sierra was reported stolen out of the parking lot of a business. The vehicle came up missing sometime over the course of the night.

Officers took the report and an attempt to locate was broadcast over the police radio advising others to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Additionally, the vehicle was listed on NCIC.

What makes this case interesting is that the vehicle was located by two of the St. George Police Department’s Volunteers in Public Safety, (VIPS). Later that day, while out serving subpoenas and other papers for the police department, VIPS observed the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot at the 1600 East block of 2450 South in St. George City.

They contacted an officer who responded to the scene and the vehicle was recovered and returned to the owner.
This is simply one of the numerous examples of the substantial benefit volunteers play in public safety.
