LA VERKIN – Firefighters from several agencies are currently battling strong winds to put out a house fire in the area of 200 N and 560 W in La Verkin.
The fire began around 5 p.m. this evening and from the looks so far, the home will be a complete loss. Firefighters are trying to stop the fire from spreading to a nearby field and nearby homes in the subdivision.
Police Chief Lloyd Watkins said the renter was burning weeds when the fire got under the house. He said the fire smoldered under the home until it reached the porch and then it took off and consumed the home.
No one was injured in the fire.

For the second time in La Verkin, in as many years, a tenant has burned brush during the dry season, causing a total loss of someone’s home. This time it was the landlord’s and (thankfully) the loss was limited to possessions and his own material things. I’m starting to think that there ought to be a default in every lease saying ‘…tenant shall use their freakin brain and not burn ANYTHING at this address without property owner’s permission, under penalty of losing their rental deposit, et all’. At what point does common sense kick in?
Yeah his own property and the melted siding on my house are the only damages.
Whats this common sense you speak of? Haven’t seen anything like that in years.
