ST. GEORGE – Albert Herrara of Utah County appeared before Judge Eric Ludlow at the Washington County Courthouse today.
Herrera made headlines in late April for engaging in a high-speed chase out of the Virgin River Gorge. The chase ended with Herrera crashing his pickup into a construction median at I-15 Exit 6. The pursuit ultimately involved the Arizona Highway Patrol, Utah Highway Patrol, and St. George Police Department. No one was hurt during the pursuit or the crash.
Herrera’s reason for running from the police was so he could avoid getting a speeding ticket. Ironically, he would end up facing a lot more serious charges by the end of the day.
He has since been released from Purgatory Correctional Facility and returned to Utah County where he has been undergoing continuing treatment for mental health issues.
Following the recommendations agreed upon by the Prosecution and Defense, Judge Ludlow sentenced Herrera to appear in Mental Health Court on July 11.
Pending the outcome of the Mental Health Court, charges connected to the high-speed chase may be dropped.
