ST. GEORGE – With starting quarterback Taylor Parker out with a shoulder injury, the Hurricane Tigers (2-0) came into their week two matchup against West Jordan shorthanded. Not only is Parker their signal caller, but their leading tackler, as well.
The Tigers also lost Zach Prince, in the secondary, because he was taking first-team snaps all week in practice and started at quarterback. Even without their starting quarterback, the Tigers offense still saw the end zone five times in a 48-36 win over the Jaguars.
Playing at Hansen Stadium, the Tigers only threw for 23 yards; but the running backs stepped up in a big way, rushing for just under 300 yards. All five Tiger touchdowns came on the ground – four of them from Brian Scott who rushed for 182 yards. Weston Yardley added the other touchdown run – Weston had 94 yards rushing with only eight carries. Adam Thompson added 62 yards rushing.
In the 2nd quarter, the Hurricane Tigers defense broke the game open causing three straight turnovers. The Tigers forced seven in all, four fumbles and three interceptions, scoring on two of them – a 79-yard fumble recovery by Kellen Seely and a 39-yard interception by Weston Yardley. The defense also got a safety in the first quarter.
The Tigers will play their first game on their new field, Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m., as they take on Tooele in their true home opener.
