SALT LAKE CITY – Coming into Friday night’s game, all coach Todd Peacock wanted was his team to improve. Playing the defending 4A state champions in their home opener, Cedar (0-1) fell 41-7.
After only gaining 29 yards passing last week, the Reds came out running. On the first drive, the Reds drove all the way down to the Highland 18-yard line, but then the problems started. Nick Sorensen’s fumble was taken 82 yards to the house, giving the Rams a 7-0 lead. The rest of the half, the Ram defense acted like a shark in blood-infested waters. They were all over the ball, causing three more turnovers in the first half. Anthony Smithson, brother of ex-University of Utah star Shaky Smithson, scored on two first half runs of 47 and 34 yards.
The Reds can bring a lot of positives into next week’s game against Skyline. The Reds defense shut the Rams out in the second half and scored their first points of the season on a 36-yard sweep by Kaylan Anderson late in the 4th quarter.
The Reds have a long way to go to get to where they want to be, but they are headed in the right direction. Cedar has one more week to improve before they start Region play.
The Reds take on Skyline Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.
