ST. GEORGE – A St. George man was sentenced on Nov. 15 for the aggravated abuse of an elderly individual.
Keith Dunn, who pled guilty to abusing of his 87-year-old grandmother in October, received a sentence of 0 to 5 years in prison.
Prosecuting county attorney Ryan Shaum said the eight months Dunn had already spent in jail would be credited to the overall term. Also included in Dunn’s sentence were 100 hours of community service and a mental health evaluation. No restitution to the victim was issued, as medical expenses were paid for via Medicare.
Shaum said the judge looked at both sides of the case. While Dunn’s abuse of his grandmother was inexcusable, there were extenuating circumstances the judge took into account before handing down the final verdict.
Dunn was arrested in June after medical staff at Dixie Regional Medical Center informed police about suspicious injuries the grandmother was seeking to have treated. A head injury proved series enough to have the elderly woman life flighted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Dunn initially denied any wrongdoing and pled not guilty, but a later resolution in the case paved the way for a guilty plea.
