Are you an aspiring young songwriter or maybe the parent of one?
The Washington County Prevention Coalition (WCPC) and the Southern Utah Song Writers Association (SUSWA) are sponsoring a song writing contest entitled “Above the Influence” for youth under 19.
It’s a chance for them to show case their talents by writing and performing a song about being above the influence of negative things such as drugs, alcohol, bullying, or stereotyping.
The song must be performed (not necessarily by the composer), taped, and uploaded to YouTube as part of the application process.
Hundreds of dollars’ worth of prizes, including gift certificates to local music stores will be awarded as well as free recording time at local studios.
The winning song will get radio airplay and the composer will be interviewed on the radio. This is a great opportunity for young performers to interact with local artists and perform their songs at local music venues.
The contest will be judged by a panel consisting of WCPC members, local artists, and members of the Southern Utah Song Writers Association (SUSWA).
It is open to anyone in Washington County under 19 years old and the song must be original. It must have a positive message about being Above the Influence of negative things. Songs cannot contain inappropriate language; promote violence, drug use, negative behavior or a negative message.
The WCPC reserves the right to exclude any song deemed inappropriate.
Youth can enter the competition at www.southwestprevention.com/youth. Submissions will be accepted through the end of January 2012.
Additional sponsors of the contest include Dan’s Guitar Repair, MusicWorks, and Paint Ball Food Storage and Violins. The WCPC is grateful for the involvement of these local businesses.
