Fire crews respond to fire in Hurricane industrial park

HURRICANE – The Hurricane City Fire Department responded to a fire at a cabinet shop at 2275 West 350 North in Hurricane on Thursday.

Hurricane fire crews arrived at on the scene at 1:30 p.m. in the industrial park north of the IHC Care Center.

The fire is speculated to have started in the dust collecting system, Deputy Chief  Merlin Spendlove said, of the Hurricane Fire Department. Much of the fire took place in the attic.

“When we arrived [the fire] was already coming out the roof,” Spendlove said.

Strong winds hampered firefighter efforts at first and necessitated calls for additional fire crews out of Washington City and Colorado City. Concerns over the growing fire also lead to the evacuation of a neighboring building.

“It’s quite a large fire at this point,” a firefighter on scene said over the radio during the fire.

Spendlove said the fire was contained and put out roughly around 2:30 p.m.

No injuries were involved in the fire.  However, Barratt Nielson, owner of the cabinet workshop, estimated property damages to the building and equipment could be between $20,000 and $50,000. Nielson said he did not have insurance.

The actual cause of the fire is unknown at this point, as the investigation is ongoing.
