ST. GEORGE – The former owner of a St. George pizza shop pleaded guilty last week to reduced charges for keeping sales taxes collected at the restaurant. James Linn Mayoros, 39, was allowed to make a plea in abeyance to three charges after he paid back $150,000 in past due taxes and agreed to pay another $10,000 before any action can be taken to close out the case.
Mayoros was charged with keeping the restaurant and sales taxes he collected at Pirate Island Pizza between 2008 and 2010. The Utah Attorney General’s Office filed criminal charges after numerous attempts to resolve the matter had failed and after Utah Tax Commission investigators discovered Mayoros was actively seeking to defraud the state.
The conviction against Mayoros will be dismissed after three years if he successfully pays back all taxes, penalties and interest and does not break any other laws. Third District Court Judge Robin W. Reese also ordered Mayoros to perform 100 hours of community service, remain in full compliance with the Utah State Tax Commission and cooperate with any further investigations.
“We are again grateful a fair resolution was made and hope it serves as a reminder that anyone who collects and then keeps state taxes is basically stealing money needed for fire protection, educating our students and basic services for our communities,” said Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.
This case was investigated by the Utah State Tax Commission and prosecuted by the Utah Attorney General’s Office.
…..So, since we lost Pirate Island due to selfish stupidity of the owner, can we opt to get a Chuckie Cheese’s in the area?! Would be a gold mine with all the big families and dump some much needed revenue into the local economy.
I heard on the radio this morning that ChicK Fillet is coming to town!
Chick Fil-A would be most welcome; I’d rather not have a chuck-e-cheese though; pretty tacky.

If not a restaurant, how about a Baby’s R Us? Talk about a gold mine. My wife and I often wonder why one hasn’t been constructed here when the nearest one is in Henderson. Tons of babies being born and their stuff is so much nicer than wally world or kmart.
With the turnover rate of retail businesses and restaurants in this town, I’d hesitate to open anything like that. Things you’d think would be a gold mine just don’t last.
Even businesses that are successful in other areas don’t make it here. Buca di Beppo hasn’t even opened and I bet it closes next year, along with several of the ice cream/yogurt shops, and that trampoline place, if it’s still open.
We want nice, fun stuff here, but we’re too cheap to support it. Oh, well, I guess.
