ST. GEORGE – Desert Hills snapped Dixie’s impressive win streak and defeated the Flyers 2-1 in a thrilling contest Thursday night.

Dixie entered the game having yet to relinquish a goal this season. As it turns out, the Lady Flyers let two get by them on their home field – and both were by the same person: Erica Hansen.

“This was a huge win for our team,” Hansen said. “It was a great accomplishment. It shows we can do anything when we put our minds to it.”

The Thunder was coming off a 2-1 road loss to Cedar and was just 2-1-2 on the season when they faced off on Dixie’s home field. Despite the record discrepancy, coach Shaley Allen didn’t think her girls were nervous entering the game.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know about their record,” she said.

Allen felt her team looked a little rough in the first half, even after Hansen’s electric goal with six minutes left in the first half.

“We talked at halftime,” Allen said. “I told them to control their composure and in the second half they turned it around.”

The Flyers had their chances. Finess White finally squeezed a shot passed Thunder keeper Lauren Bushnell for Dixie’s first goal of the game.

“We had more opportunities than they did,” coach Burt Myers said. “We missed easy opportunities. We didn’t take advantage and they did.”

Shortly after White’s score, Hansen careened through a mob of players and poked the ball into the goal in the game’s most unusual play.

“(Hansen) went in to kick the ball and did a pitching-wedge shot – the ball just kind of spun around,” Myers said. “I didn’t see it go in, but my girls said it was a score so I shut my mouth.”

The goal left many of the Dixie fans baffled, as no whistle was blown and the final call came from the sideline official.

“Everyone was kind of confused during the play,” Hansen said. “I saw the ball bobbling around and just ran up and kicked it in.”

The Thunder will next play Snow Canyon and Dixie will square off against Cedar.

Elsewhere in Region 9, Cedar’s Hannah Smith notched a game winner against Snow Canyon for a 1-0 victory to give the Warriors their first loss of the season.

Pine View defeated Canyon View off a Janzen Morgan penalty kick in double overtime for the Panthers first win against a region opponent.
