GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Dixie (2-0) at Provo (0-2)
FLYERS
Classification: 3A, Region 9
Coach: Blaine Monkres (23rd year, 158-86 overall)
Offense: Spread
Last week: Beat River valley, Ariz., 49-3
Players to watch: Drew Batchelor has become a real touchdown-maker with five in two games. The defensive line, anchored by Jesse lambert, has its work cut out for it. Provo is a run-heavy team. Also, Kyle Hansen says he’s ready to play coming off that knee injury.
PPG: 38.5
PAPG: 8.0
Trend: Throw out that game with River Valley as any kind of measuring stick. It’s doubtful any Dust Devil player could have started for Dixie. However, the Flyers are potent offensively against anyone. We have yet to see them at full strength. Also, Joseph Takau is a bruiser at running back.
BULLDOGS
Classification: 4A, Region 8
Coach: Cody Mallory (first year, 0-2 overall)
Offense: Wishbone, wingback
Last week: Lost to Pleasant Grove 41-7
Players to watch: Jeff Van Buren is the quarterback, though he doesn’t throw well – only 33 percent completion rate this season. He is averaging 60 yards a game rushing, as is fullback Spencer Ika.
PPG: 9.5
PAPG: 30.5
Trend: The Bulldogs started with a tough schedule as Westlake is decent and Pleasant Grove is excellent. That’s a difficult way to start a career for a new head coach in Mallory. Still, he has the right idea by establishing a punishing running game. The Bulldogs were actually in the game against Westlake.
GAME OUTLOOK
This will be a harder game for the Flyers than it may seem. Provo is physical up front and wants to control the ball and the clock. Don’t be surprised if it’s very close until the fourth quarter. This may be the week we find out how good this Dixie offense really is.
