ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon continued its dominant play, securing a 3-0 shutout against Desert Hills Tuesday night.
Tirsa Snyder scored all three goals for the Warriors, two in the first half and one in the second half, while keeper Grace Walton recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
“Everything went pretty good for me,” Snyder said. “Well, not pretty good. Really good.”
The young junior had just two goals on the season prior to the contest, but made her presence known on the Thunders home field.
Early in the first half, Meghan McKenna took a corner kick and tried to make something happen. Desert Hills’s defense did its best to fight off the attack, but Snyder managed to kick the ball in the net for the first goal of the game.
Later, with just seconds remaining on the clock before halftime, Cami Bergen sent a beautiful cross to Snyder who took the shot from 10-yards out. The ball soared past Lauren Bushnell’s outstretched arms for Snow Canyon’s second goal of the contest.
“Tirsa’s a hard worker,” Warrior coach Ken Kunde said. “She has great ball instincts. That second goal came on a cross and Tirsa just flicked it in. It’s nice to see the young kids stepping up for the team this close to state.”
Snyder’s final goal came with 14-minutes left in the game. Amidst a chaotic scramble for the ball right in front of the Desert Hills box, Bushnell left her post to block an attack. The ball took a short bounce and landed right in front of Snyder, who calmly finished the play.
“The ball just ended up in front of me,” Snyder said.
Snow Canyon netted its seventh consecutive victory with the win and must now face a red-hot Dixie squad, which won its own match against Cedar by a score of 3-0. The Flyers have now won four in a row and look poised to make some noise heading into playoffs.
“This region really helps you prepare for state,” Kunde said. “Everyone is so tough. You can’t overlook anyone.”
Besides Cedar and Dixie, the only other Region 9 game was between Canyon View and Hurricane. The Falcons beat the Tigers 2-1 for their first win of the season.
