ST. GEORGE – More than 150 campers from several states showed up this morning, 24-hours prior to the opening of Southern Utah’s first Chick-fil-A at the Red Rock Commons location in St. George. Chick-fil-A opens tomorrow.
The ‘First 100’ campers chosen must stay on the property for the next 24 hours to secure their spot in line and will be fed and entertained to help pass the time.
Carl Johnson said he brought a tent, chairs, pillows and blankets. If he can get a Wi-Fi connection, he said he would kill the time by doing some homework and watching movies on Netflix. Others had no real plan for entertainment other than their friends who are supporting them along the way, some of who are also trying to get free Chick-fil-A for a year.
Utah’s first stand-alone Chick-Fil-A restaurant opened 10 years ago in Sandy and tomorrow the chain will have 17 locations in the state, out of over 1,000 locations in the nation reached with the opening in St. George.
The first 100 in line will receive a one-year supply of Chick-fil-A, valued at $29,000 by the franchisor, before operator Deven Macdonald even rings up his first customer. Campers will receive their one-year supply of coupons sometime between 6-6:10 a.m. tomorrow morning as the Chick-fil-A Cow leads the campers in a conga line across the red carpet into the restaurant.
Scott McNeal, one of the near 200 people who gathered today before 6 a.m., said that if he won free Chick-fil-A for a year he would probably eat it all in one week.

Says a lot about our society, this many people willing to stay 24 hours at a place to get free processed unhealthy food for a year! I assume all these people are unemployed or are taking time off work, truly sad indeed.
How is it any different than camping out on Black Friday? Or contests to win cars where the people have to keep their hands on the car? And also, why do these people have to be umemployed to take part in this? Maybe its their day off or maybe they are college students? What is truly sad is your closed-minded perception of the world.
Thanks for reinforcing my point LD! I would maybe try and work on my reading comprehension too! Did you miss the last sentence? Go get your Chick-nasty-food!
These people aren’t any different than the ones that camp out on Black Friday, or do all other sorts of silly stuff with the idea that they are getting something “for free.” They are greedy, illogical, and have way too much time on their hands. But I suppose if they weren’t doing this, they would be doing something equally as stimulating and productive, such as watching Simpson’s or King of the Hill on TV. . .
Lets weigh these people today, and then again when the free food is up! I want to place bets too! Bring on the type 2 diabetes!
Wow ld, sounds like you’re having a rough day ..;)
His number wasn’t one of the hundred!!
“…as the Chick-fil-A Cow leads the campers in a conga line across the red carpet into the restaurant.” HA! I wish I didn’t have to work – I would love to see that.
I want to express a deep thanks to the employees who showed extreme kindness during this event. Chick-fil-A has employees who are polite to a level that we don’t see too often anymore. Their attitudes make me want to support them and say “my pleasure” more often. Thank you Chick-Fil-A for showing the world that our attitudes and the respect we give to others should be one of the most important parts of our lives. In my experience I’ve only come across one other company that was this kind to so many people and that was a 5 star hotel in Michigan! Two thumbs up, my family had a GREAT time and the food was as good as everyone said it would be!
Hurray, hurray, let’s all shout hurray. Mind your amber, we shall shed spontaneous tears of joy for this company for bringing so much happiness to our very own home turf!
One year of free meals at this place is valued at $29,000? Is that calculated by figuring breakfast + lunch + dinner for 365 days? Will each of these “winners” pay the appropriate taxes on the value of the payout?
Each person got enough coupons to eat one meal each week for a year which was about $250 each person. Those coupons can be shared with other people too. The winner doesn’t have to eat 52 meals all by themselves. All the details are on Chick-Fil-A’s website.
Looks like the poorly written article claimed me as a victim. The statement, “The first 100 in line will receive a one-year supply of Chick-fil-A, valued at $29,000 by the franchisor…” pretty much says each person receives a value of $29k. The editor was asleep at the wheel.
You know, to each his own right? I think it is funny and comical and gives people something to talk and argue about (as seen on this board) Life is so serious at times and we have many stresses through the day so why not just be silly once in a while and have some fun? Some people are so uptight. I personally dont have the time to sit in line for 24 hours nor would I necessarily pick that as my leisure activity. Thats me though and I am glad that not everyone is like me otherwise, at times, the world would be dull place to live. I say Carpe Diem!
Don’t you mean “Carpe Chicken?” 😀
Looks like a bunch of Gay Crabby Crybabies who don’t like Chick Fil A only because of it’s founders opinion, find that they can appear to be tough behind their keyboards… but you’ll find those same Gay persons marching in a Lame “Gay Pride” Parade!.
WELCOME TO ST. GEORGE CHICK FIL A!
What in the world does being gay have to do with liking or not liking chicken? Sounds more like a big turkey to me. . .:p
