SOUTHERN UTAH – The recent rain has made a significant impact on the Cinder Pit and Rush Lake Fires and fire officials anticipate 100 percent containment of both fires by the end of the day or early Sunday morning.
Rush Lake Fire
Located approximately 25 miles northwest of Cedar City along state Route 130, the 250-acre Lake Rush Fire was started by lightning on Friday around 2:20 p.m.
Heavy rains Friday night helped to moderate fire behavior. Fire crews anticipate that this fire will be 100 percent contained by late tonight or early tomorrow. Crews will also spend the majority of the day ensuring the fire perimeter is secured and putting out hot spots.
There is currently no documented level of containment, but very little fire activity will enable crews to quickly contain this fire.
Two outbuildings and a pump house have been threatened by the fire, but risks have been moderated. No evacuations, road closures or injuries in connection to the fire have been issued or reported.
Cinder Pit Fire
Heavy rains have had a substantial impact on the 439-acre Cinder Pit Fire located between Veyo and Brookside. Fire crews anticipate 100 percent containment by Saturday evening. The fire is currently 80 percent contained.
Nearby structures are no longer threatened by the fire. Travelers are urged to use caution along state Route 18 and to be aware of fire crews along the shoulder.
Aerial support was removed last night as the entire perimeter was covered and crews were attending to mop up of hot spots.
No excavations or injuries have been issued or reported in connection with the fire.
The Cinder Pit Fire was also lightning-caused and began Thursday around 3:35 p.m.
