Dixie Elks reach out to veterans in need

ST. GEORGE – The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Dixie Elks Lodge No. 1743, has received a $2,000 grant that will be used to help homeless veterans in the area. Provided by the Elks National Foundation Veterans Commission, this funding will allow the lodge to determine needs in the local community and develop a plan to address the problems.

The lodge will work closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs’ homeless advocacy to locate veterans in need, spokeswoman Betty Archambault said. Funding will be used to help with deposits needed for rental homes and to purchase items necessary to set up a household.

Additionally, the lodge will hold fundraising events to supplement the grant funds, Archambault said, and to be sure all veterans in need receive assistance.

The lodge also received a veterans aid grant in 2012, which they used to make an end-of-life preparation guide for veterans and their families, along with a series of related workshops. The workshops will be held again, starting in January 2014, and more guides will be distributed.

Those interested in participating, and in helping with veterans, are invited to contact the Dixie Elks.
