Colorado man arrested in Zion for drug distribution

WASHINGTON COUNTY – A Colorado man was arrested late Friday in Zion National Park on drug related charges.

National Park Rangers came across a Toyota SUV parked on the side of Kolob Terrace Road around 5:30 p.m., Friday, according to the probable cause statement filed in conjunctions with his arrest. The SUV was unoccupied and when the rangers looked into the vehicle through the windows, they saw eye drops, a light and green leafy substance in the center console. The passenger side window of the vehicle was open and both rangers reported they picked up a strong odor of burnt marijuana.

The rangers made contact with the owner of the SUV, Spero G. Falliers, 58, of Buena Vista, Colo., around 9:30 p.m. and told the man they had smelled burnt marijuana coming from his vehicle. They then asked him if he had any marijuana on him and he gave the rangers a small bag with a film canister of marijuana and a pipe. The rangers then searched the SUV and found a glass jar alleged to be filled with possible marijuana, as well as a large blue bag within a duffel bag that contained multiple baggies and two yellow containers filled with suspected marijuana, a pipe and other possible paraphernalia.

A Washington County Sheriff’s deputy was called in to assist the rangers who took Falliers into custody. He was booked into the Purgatory Correctional Facility and his vehicle was impounded. Falliers was charged with two third-degree felonies for drug possession and distribution and a class-B misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia.

While inspecting the evidence gathered by rangers, the deputy determined two of the bags taken from Falliers’ vehicle to contain possible hashish.

Ed. Note: Persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
