High winds uproot trees around SUU, knock out power

CEDAR CITY – High winds took their toll on landscaping around the Southern Utah University campus today where at least 10 trees have been uprooted.

SUUnews.com, the university’s news site, reported that around 2 p.m. the winds picked up to about 70 mph and started ripping trees out of the ground, some of which fell against campus buildings. No major structural has been has been reported.

The fallen trees will be chipped and recycled for use much mulch for other trees and fire beds, while parts that can’t be chipped will be turned into firewood, Tiger Funk, SUU’s Facilities Management executive director told SUUnews.

Power outages were also reported in Cedar City subdivision from about 9-10:15 a.m. according to ABC 4 Utah, though some area were still left without power by early afternoon. As of  3 p.m., according to Rocky Mountain Power’s power outage page, power has been restored to customers in the region.

The National Weather Service recently issued a high wind advisory for Southern Utah counties, as well as much of the state, for between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday.
