ST. GEORGE – Desert Hills High School’s Cross Country team, from St. George, was among many who spent the night on Interstate 15 in the Virgin River Gorge of the Arizona Strip Saturday.
The team was on a return trip from a track meet in San Diego, passed through Mesquite sometime around 10:30 a.m. and soon found themselves locked into a long line of traffic backed up on the Interstate due to traffic incidents, snow and ice conditions that ultimately led to the stretch of highway being closed down for the night.

After Arizona Highway Patrol cleared traffic to move Sunday morning, the team’s bus proceeded to Desert Hills High School where it was met by anxious parents and friends, most of whom had not been able to make contact with the team through the night due to limited cellular service.
The team’s coach, Logan Fielding, and team members met with St. George News at the high school Sunday afternoon and told of their experience that night. As the night wore on, many teammates found blankets and food from the coach bus they were traveling in and were able to share those with people in need stuck in the surrounding line of cars.

Just so you know, The Pine View and Dixie high school wrestling team were sharing a bus and also got stuck in the Gorge for around 12 hrs coming back from the Green Valley duels in Vegas.
guess track is a winter sport now huh?

I find it interesting that Principal Taylor approves a chartered bus for his cross country team to go to San Diego, When just a few weeks ago he threw Principal Campbell under the bus for wanting to take the football teams to SLC to play in the stadium at the U of U.I think both activities are fine just don’t understand the double standard of the principal.
I guess thats what the new school bond will pay for is busing sports teams all over the country
For those of you who want to Rag on the fact that DHHS had a Charter Bus… Those kids held a car wash, auction and a few other fund raisers in order to Charter that bus. I am very proud of their hard work and effort they put into making this trip happen and maybe you should not jump to conclusions that the school paid for their trip.
Maybe you should applaud their efforts of hard work and planning in advance instead of making complaints and uninformed comments.
This cross country trip was not a school sponsored event. It was something that the team members chose to do independently. The school did not pay for the trip in any way. Also, I don’t think that Sharla Campbell would appreciate anyone saying that Rusty Taylor threw her under the bus. I know both of these people very well and they have the highest amount of respect for each other. Some people thought it would be best to have the football game played closer to home like at Dixie College or SUU to save the school district the huge amount of money that it cost to send all of our children to Salt Lake City when their fans were down here. Please just try to be kind and remember there is always more to any story than what meets the eye.
