HURRICANE – The Hurricane City Council meeting was brief Thursday night since two agenda items were tabled and the discussion on the other items was relatively short.
Of most interest, the council heard a presentation from Hurricane Valley Lion’s Club First Vice President Glen Zumwalt about the building of what the club is currently calling the Hurricane Historic Wayside – a park on the 6/10 of an acre triangle at 200 East State Street (state Route 9) near Fire Station 41 right where the road curves. The idea of the park, Zumwalt said, as he showed the council and citizens in attendance a conceptual drawing of it, is to create a welcome center for Hurricane and provide information about the city’s history and recreation on a four-sided kiosk. In addition to the kiosk, the park’s main attraction would be a replica of the Hurricane Canal, which was vital to the town’s establishment in the early 20th century.
“It won’t take a lot of work,” Zumwalt said of the park.
The park will not cost the city much either, Zumwalt further explained, telling the council, after a citizen question, that it will be completed mostly through donations and volunteer work. The biggest expense he mentioned would be sidewalks and pathways. The park would also require moving a power pole. He said he did not come to the meeting to ask the city for money, just for grading and irrigation.
The park’s maintenance would be minimal, Zumwalt said, since it would consist of xeriscape with native plants and no grass. The park would not include a pavilion or a playground.
Mayor Hirschi was not shy in lending his support.
“We need to get people involved,” he said. “You’re not a Hurricane resident unless you know what our forefathers did to get water here.”
In addition to Zumwalt’s presentation on the historic wayside park, Because Animals Matter presented the Hurricane City Fire Department with two pet oxygen masks and the council approved the final plat for Phase 2 of The Retreat at Sand Hollow Resort, which contains 49 lots at approximately 4900 West and 3320 South.
