ST. GEORGE — At 8 a.m. on Friday, a southbound semitrailer lost control on the downside of the Black Ridge on Interstate 15 at mile marker 35 and tipped over on its driver’s side, blocking both southbound lanes of travel.

A small green Mazda driven by a pregnant woman slid into the truck after it had tipped over. The woman and the driver of the semi were “shaken up” and both were taken to the Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, according to a statement released by the Utah Highway Patrol.

The semi was loaded with 39,000 pounds of potatoes and Utah Department of Transportation has a front-end loader and two large semi-wreckers at the location of the accident. As of 9:30 a.m. Friday, the  UDOT was still trying to get both lanes reopened, the statement said.

There is a large back-up on I-15 from the Iron County line to the Washington County line because of this accident. As of 12:25 p.m. Friday, UHP reported that the southbound traffic was at a standstill at mile marker 36 and that one lane of traffic was open.

UDOT reported via Twitter that the roadway was clear shortly after 1 p.m., though some delays may still occur.

I hope the pregnant women and the semi driver are only shook up and nothing more. That would be scary.
