Range war: Federal agencies stop cattle impound

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. – In order to avert harm to federal employees and members of the public, the “range war” on the ground has been called off, although the government intends to yet pursue resolution of its issues with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his cattle administratively and judicially.

Director of the Bureau of Land Management Neil Kornze disseminated the following statement Saturday morning concerning the cattle impounding action in Nevada:

As we have said from the beginning of the gather to remove illegal cattle from federal land consistent with court orders, a safe and peaceful operation is our number one priority. After one week, we have made progress in enforcing two recent court orders to remove the trespass cattle from public lands that belong to all Americans.

Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public.

We ask that all parties in the area remain peaceful and law-abiding as the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service work to end the operation in an orderly manner.

Ranching has always been an important part of our nation’s heritage and continues throughout the West on public lands that belong to all Americans. This is a matter of fairness and equity, and we remain disappointed that Cliven Bundy continues to not comply with the same laws that 16,000 public lands ranchers do every year. After 20 years and multiple court orders to remove the trespass cattle, Mr. Bundy owes the American taxpayers in excess of $1 million. The BLM will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially.

This may be the best way to handle this. The nuts will go back to where they came from and the BLM and NPS rangers on patrol can just shoot the cattle as they find them. Meanwhile the government lawyers should be seizing all of Bundy’s assets to recover as much of the taxpayer’s costs as possible.

Bundy can keep what he owes us, give us back the 700 million spent on Obama care.

  • Cameron April 12, 2014 at 2:53 pm

Yet they spend 3 million + in taxpayer money to try and take his cattle. I’d sure like to know how much of his one million is grazing fees and how much is late fees etc.

Ever wonder why Nevada Sen Reid is so quiet regarding his constituents and the invasion of his state? If this conflicted area was on the south side of Clark county near Searchlight, NV. , he’d be out on the road selling Chinese firecrackers to the range cattle for protection and turtle soup to the BLM cops.
What a sellout circus going on for ’30 pieces of silver’ to line one’s pocket. This whole scrip reminds me of a Larry David story for that Crammer guy character.

So to collect “$1 million” from the taxpayers the U.S. Government spent $3 million to prove a point and trampled all over the rights of Americans in the process?! Yep, sounds like the U.S. Government!

U.S. gov, BLM back down from starting a shooting war in Nevada re: Harry Reid land deals with China?

The Bundys don’t owe any money. They fired the BLM. The BLM charges fees that they say are nesecery for maintenance of the public land. When they wouldn’t keep their end of the deal, the Bundys quit paying the fee. They did however put the money in a trust and then used it to maintain the land. They have done a better job than the BLM at the maintenance. The BLM said they are concerned for the welfare of the desert tortoise. They want to designate some of the land to protect its habitat. They fail to mention that this protected species is now over populating. And that they are uthinizing them. I can see both sides of the story. The BLM just isn’t telling us that their true motives are that they want money and real estate.

  • Concerned April 12, 2014 at 11:32 pm

I’m sure this came down from Obama. Please don’t wake the sleeping giant when we are barely hanging on to the Senate. I hope we all don’t get lulled to sleep. We can’t stop until we get our lands back and stop the tyranny. I’m sure all those Bundy haters would have been right in line with the loyalist’s back in the revelutionary war.

  • Simone April 12, 2014 at 11:42 pm

The BLM isn’t just giving up. They are just waiting. They are waiting because Bundy has managed to get every right wing nut job who hates the government out there and they don’t want one of the said nut jobs to kick off and start shooting people. Unfortunately criminals like Bundy and pals don’t have one care in the world about the lives of others, the police do. So they backed off. For now. 🙂

  • Leon Fager April 12, 2014 at 11:42 pm

It’s too bad we let nut cases like Bundy break the law and rather than being hauled off to jail like the rest of us would. The BLM lost a great opportunity by showing these Burgess right wing ranchers that this is our land not some ranchers. The desert tortoise has every right to survise as does some dumb human. It’s too bad that the politicians who make laws don’t have the guts to allow federal land managers to enforce them. I think the rancher and his nut case cronies are arrested for breaking the law and his cattle are sold to help pay his debt to the taxpayer. Long live the desert tortoise which belongs to the American public and short live the rancher and the politicians who support this law breaking activity.

    • research before you comment April 13, 2014 at 9:15 pm

List a law that has been broken. The state recognizes the grazing rights for cattle ranchers on public lands. The ranchers have been there for years. The BLM was created to maintain the land and corals and such. One could choose to pay the BLM for these services or take care of it on there own. When they failed to do there job. The Bundys quit paying. They have been taking care of the land and making upgrades. All out of their own pocket. The BLM has no jurisdiction here. This is a state issue not a federal issue. And the desert tortoise that they say they are trying to protect is being uthinized by the BLM because it is now overpopulating the area.

  • David O'Neill April 13, 2014 at 6:05 am

Yep. American government efficiency at it’s finest!

  • Mark April 13, 2014 at 8:15 am

Shoot those hillbillies and those blocking traffic, what kind of message does this send to all ranchers that are paying taxes?
