WASHINGTON COUNTY – Local law enforcement officers and public officials will hit the pavement in support of Special Olympics Utah on Thursday as they participate in the 2014 Washington County Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Each year, Law Enforcement Torch Run events take place across the globe as law enforcement officers worldwide join forces with Special Olympics to help raise funds and awareness, carrying the Special Olympics Flame of Hope in its ceremonial run.
Locally, three different legs of the Special Olympics Utah torch run will take place in Hurricane, Washington City and St. George on Thursday. More than 100 Washington County law enforcement officers, along with local government officials, Special Olympians and their coaches, will accompany the Flame of Hope on its journey.
The Hurricane leg of the Washington County Law Enforcement Torch Run will kick off the day’s events at 9 a.m. The run will begin at 600 N. 870 West in Hurricane, according to information from Special Olympics Utah, and the torch will be carried from that starting point to Three Falls Elementary School, 789 S. 700 West.
The Washington City leg of the torch run is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Parkway and Telegraph Street in Washington. The torch will be carried from that starting point to the northeast entrance of the Wal-Mart parking lot, located at 625 W. Telegraph St. in Washington.
The St. George leg will mark the conclusion of Thursday’s torch run events, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Washington County School District parking lot, 121 W. Tabernacle St. in St. George, and concluding at Vernon Worthen Park, 300 S. 400 East. St. George Mayor Jon Pike and members of the St. George City Council will join Washington County law enforcement officers and Special Olympians during this last leg of the torch run.
The Flame of Hope will conclude its local journey at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. Law enforcement officers will carry the torch into the Desert Hills High School auditorium, 828 E. Desert Hills Dr. in St. George, as part of the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics South Area track and field competition, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude around 2:30 p.m. at Desert Hills High School. The public is invited to attend the event, and admission is free.
