CEDAR CITY – Memorial Day is a time for remembrance and respect. While Cathy and Rick Bryant remember their loved ones, they also look towards the future and help those in need through the annual Colleen and Kay Scott Memorial Day Fundraiser at Main Street Park.
This year’s event is in support of 3-year-old Temprence Cathcart, who suffers from Dermatomyositis– considered a muscular dystrophy by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the cause of Dermatomyositis is unclear. The body’s immune system turns against its own muscles and damages muscle tissue in an autoimmune process. In Dermatomyositis, these cells attack the small blood vessels that supply muscles and skin.
Treatment is currently being done to help little Temperance.
The Bryant’s – owners of Funtime Inflatables in Cedar City – initially started the fundraiser 11 years ago to raise money for Cathy Bryant’s mother.
“Cathy’s mother got cancer, and they reached a point where the treatment facility couldn’t treat them anymore unless they came up with some money,” Rick Bryant said. “They had run through their insurance and things, things were tough.”
The Bryant’s wanted to help the situation in any way they could.
“Memorial Day was coming up and we were thinking what could we do,” Rick Bryant said. “We didn’t have money in the bank we could give them, but we have inflatables.”
Inflatables were set up in the park for the public to enjoy and donations were received, Cathy Bryant said.
Over $900 was raised. Unfortunately only 30 days later, Cathy Bryant’s mother, Colleen Scott passed away.
The Bryant’s continue her legacy and the legacy of Kay Scott – Cathy Bryant’s sister-in-law who also passed away due to cancer – through the Colleen and Kay Scott Memorial Foundation and the annual Memorial Day fundraiser.
Every year a different family or person is selected who is facing a medical challenge. 100 percent of the donations go directly to the family.
“Most of them we don’t know,” Cathy Bryant said, “we just hear about them and we call and talk to them and ask them if it’s ok.”
Those visiting the park on Memorial Day from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. will enjoy free fun activities including, inflatables, hot dogs, drinks, cotton candy, kettle corn, snow cones, and more.
After Memorial Day, donations for Temprence Cathcart can be made at the State Bank of Southern Utah under the Colleen and Kay Scott Memorial Foundation, or online at You Caring.
