ST. GEORGE — After almost a year of planning and months of approaching the city with the idea of opening a permanent indoor swap meet, the Indoor Shoppers Market, located in the 16,000-square-foot building at 1028 East Tabernacle in St. George, will host its grand opening Saturday.
The Indoor Shoppers Market expects to have 42 different vendors displaying on Saturday, along with Kony Country, a bounce house, food and drinks and giveaways every hour for their grand opening.
This market will bring a unique facet to the St. George shopping experience, said business owner Karen Sunderland who has been an antique dealer for over twenty years. The front of the store will be dedicated for new or antique items and has space for 72 vendors, the back of the store is specified for used items and has 15-18 spaces available.
“I think this is a great venue for people who are retired and want to sell crafts they make,” Sunderland said. “Opening your own shop is extremely expensive. But this way people have the option of renting week by week or month to month.”
Many of the items offered are familiar vendors such as home décor, jewelry, handbags and wallets; but there will also be one-of-a-kind crafts and antiques for sale.
Four community booths will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis for any nonprofit organizations, such as girl scouts or school fundraisers.
“It doesn’t matter if its political or religious,” Sunderland said. “Just as long as you can prove to me that it is not for profit.”
Roger Wilson, originally from Illinois has lived in St. George since 2008. He sells antiques that he and his cousin have collected from auctions, garage sales and thrift shops. He has everything from 1950s baseball cards to dollhouses.
“I’ve sold at several different flea markets in Las Vegas off and on for about three years, but this is a lot better location. Probably my highest valued item is that reproduction of an old fire truck,” Wilson said, pointing to a kid-sized fire truck.
This market gives people the opportunity to have a presence in the area without having to open up their own shop, said health and wellness advocate Sandra Cox. She sells essential oils and offers free body scans that test frequencies of the body in order to diagnose deficiencies of vitamins and minerals.
“We’re kind of like a co-op of vendors,” Cox said. “We share the expenses and have a lot of fun.”
The Indoor Shoppers Market will be open year-round Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone interested in acquiring a space may contact Karen Sunderland at 435-229-0243.
