MOHAVE COUNTY, Arizona – A 54-year-old man was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting his daughter and her boyfriend with a gun.

Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Deral Jon Houston, 54, of Scenic, Arizona, early Thursday morning on two felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one of those involving domestic violence.

At around 2:30 a.m., Thursday, a 33-year-old woman called 911 and reported her father was chasing her and her boyfriend, sheriff’s spokeswoman Trish Carter said in a statement released Monday. The 911-caller said her father had fired shots at them.

The call came from outside a home on the 600 block of Jacobs Well Lane in Scenic, Arizona. Sheriff’s deputies made contact with the woman and her boyfriend in the area of Western Avenue and River View Drive. An officer with the Mesquite Police Department also responded to the scene.

The woman told the deputies that her boyfriend was waiting in a dirt field nearby the residence when her father confronted her outside with gun in hand and started chasing her.

“The victim further advised that Houston confronted her and her boyfriend in a wash when Houston pointed the gun at her boyfriend, a 35-year-old victim, and she jumped between them,” Carter wrote. “The victim reported that she fell to the ground after Houston struck her in the head with the handgun. The victim further reported that she and her boyfriend started running after Houston fired a shot.”

Deputies noted possible swelling on the right side of the woman’s face, according to the statement. Her boyfriend was unharmed.

Deputies went to Houston’s residence nearby and conducted a high-risk contact with Houston as he was standing outside. He was taken into custody without incident.

Houston told deputies he had issues with his daughter and her boyfriend who he said filed a false police report against him in Nevada last year. According to Carter’s statement, Houston confirmed confronting them while they were leaving, he said, and had fired the gun in response to their allegedly swinging a pipe or stick at him.

Houston was transported and booked into jail in Mesquite, Nevada. The gun was taken and placed in evidence pending the county attorney’s review

Ed. note: Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact. The use of the term “victim” by Carter does not imply Houston has been found guilty of charges against him at this point in the legal process.
