BLM closes parts of Red Cliffs Recreation Area for maintenance

ST. GEORGE – The Bureau of Land Management-Utah St. George Field Office will temporarily close access to some facilities and areas within the Red Cliffs Recreation Area to public use to conduct scheduled maintenance. The temporary closure begins Friday and is expected to last through late November.

Heavy equipment will be in operation throughout the Red Cliffs campground, day-use area, and the White Reef trailhead; these areas will remain closed until all maintenance and construction work is completed.  This maintenance effort will improve public safety and enhance the visitor experience by constructing vehicle and pedestrian bridges over Quail Creek, expanding paved parking, and adding a handicapped-accessible picnic area.

The following non-motorized trails and public-use sites within Red Cliffs Recreation Area, east of Quail Creek and north of the White Reef trailhead will remain open during construction and maintenance:

Nonmotorized trails

  • Adams Trail (east of Quail Creek)
  • Adit Trail
  • Anasazi Trail (between Mano Trail and Red Cliffs Archaeological Site)
  • Cordura Trail
  • Grubstake Trail
  • Leeds Reef Trail
  • Mano Trail
  • McMullin Trail
  • Metate Trail
  • Red Reef East Trail (between Mano trail and north NCA boundary)
  • Tipple Trail
  • White Reef Trail

Public-use sites

  • “They Came to Cordura” movie set site
  • Willard G. McMullin Home, Harrisburg
  • Red Cliffs Archaeological Site

Interstate Rock Products, based out of Hurricane, was selected to complete the project work.

The Red Cliffs Recreation Area is located 13 miles north of St. George in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, which was set aside to conserve, protect, and enhance ecological, scenic, wildlife, recreational, cultural, historical, natural, educational, and scientific resources.  Visitors are asked to recreate responsibly and to respect the resources that make the Red Cliffs Recreation Area and National Conservation Area so unique by staying on designated trails.
