MESQUITE, Nevada – A father and his two sons had a close call but escaped serious injury Wednesday night when their SUV hit a guardrail on Interstate 15.
At approximately 7 p.m., the family members were traveling northbound on I-15 near Exit 122 when the driver, one of the sons, fell asleep at the wheel. The father began yelling and woke his son up, but they were unable to avoid hitting the guardrail, according to a press release from Mesquite Fire and Rescue.
The family’s Jeep Cherokee sustained significant damage, but the passengers were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle before responders arrived on scene. Mesquite Fire units and paramedics arrived, along with Nevada Highway Patrol and Mesquite Police. The father and sons refused medical assistance.
Mesquite Fire and Emergency Services wishes to reminds travelers they should only drive when well-rested, the press release said. Drivers should always pull over to rest if they observe any of the following signs:
- Difficulty focusing, frequent blinking or heavy eyelids
- Daydreaming; wandering/disconnected thoughts
- Trouble remembering the last few miles driven; missing exits or traffic signs
- Yawning repeatedly or rubbing your eyes
- Trouble keeping your head up
- Drifting from your lane, tailgating or hitting a shoulder rumble strip
- Feeling restless and irritable
