ST. GEORGE – A St. George man was sentenced in 5th District Court Tuesday morning for impersonating a police officer and for multiple counts of aggravated assault.

Tyler Seth Goodman, 26, appeared before Judge Eric Ludlow with his lawyer as sentencing options were considered.

The charges, four third-degree felonies for aggravated assault and one class B misdemeanor for impersonating a police officer, stem from a June 21 incident in which Goodman entered a garage and threatened four people inside with a firearm while also stating he was with the St. George Police Department and while under the possible influence of alcohol.

Goodman pleaded guilty to the charges on July 15.

Sentencing recommendations derived from a pre-sentencing investigation were that Goodman serve 365 days in the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility and receive 36 months supervised probation, along with additional stipulations.

“The recommendation is fair,” Trevor Terry, Goodman’s attorney, said.

Terry did, however, ask Ludlow to allow credit for time already served by his client, and he also asked for the possibility of a review hearing in six months. He additionally asked for the possibility that his client be enrolled in a treatment program.

“He needs to get treatment,” Terry said.

Deputy Washington County Attorney Zach Weiland had no objections to the recommendations, though he suggested the review hearing take place in nine months instead of six. He also recommended that Goodman be placed in a treatment program at that time, if possible.

Before sentencing, Goodman was allowed to speak to the court.

“I’m sure this wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t drinking heavily,” Goodman said. “I understand the severity of what I’ve done.”

Goodman added that he’s lost a great deal and is willing to do whatever is needed to answer for what happened.

Ludlow sentenced Goodman to 365 days in jail with credit for 70-plus days already served. A review hearing has been scheduled for June 9, 2015. Upon his release from jail, Goodman must complete 36 months of supervised probation. He must also pay court fees, undergo a substance abuse evaluation and mental evaluation, complete his high school diploma or an equivalent, and not have access to firearms during probation.

As a part of a plea deal, Goodman pleaded guilty on July 15 to four counts of third-degree aggravated assault and a class B misdemeanor for impersonating a police officer. Sundry other charges, including misdemeanor intoxication and other felonies related to the incident, were dismissed.
