SOUTHERN UTAH — Flooding and road closures continue as a result of heavy rains that hit Southern Utah Monday evening. Local authorities advise caution to drivers in St. George and encourage residents to stay home if there is no need to go out.

Message from St. George Police Department:

Remember, only drive through water if you know that it’s not too deep. It is generally best to not drive through standing water because it is difficult to know how deep it is. You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, double the distance you leave between your car and the car in front of you, as stopping distances are increased by wet roads, and if steering becomes unresponsive due to the rain, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

    I don,t understand engineers in this town, how they can,t figure out the drains and flooding areas.. I was ,on Bluff st. Monday night early and saw the drain s on the right side of bluff st filled with dirt, it was never cleaned out after the last storm last week, yet Marc mortension said they cleaned them all out.
    I saw how bad the aea was on Dixie dr. By Swiss storage area,, the. City just redid the wash area there… And it was wrong… Weather patterns are changing and they should adjust plans to prevent flooding… What was the 100 yr old flood. Is now yearly or weekly…but then again we spent 5million dollars on a stupid waterfall down main st. We didn,t need and didn,t vote.. If peopl think the federal govt. wastes our tax dollars, look at t George…

      Not an issue of engineering.. just plain cheapness. If our city leaders were to enact and uphold better flood building codes less flooding damage and delays would occur. Unfortunately, in most small towns like St George, real estate drives the local elections and the building codes get watered down… The people of St George deserve better and need to demand more of its elected officials. St George will not be a small town for much longer. If you cheap out now, everyone in St George will pay more; Everyone, but the developers that are now spending their profits and have moved back to Vegas. Only elect official that will strengthen your building codes for long term quality growth. Quick Question.. ever wonder why there ar No schools West of the I-15 near exit 10?? Greensprings has no children? Or just not profitable? Now we have traffic issues . Just poor plannig

    Please ask your freelance contributors to provide an intersection address or complete street address for photos considered for publication. It’s not enough to put up a photo with little or no identifying information.

      We work with what we get, chickweed. We appreciate the contributions. Maybe some of them will read your request and remember next time. Honestly, on a storm hitting so many regions at once with many impacts, that’s just one thing we can’t hunt down – would like to, but …

    “Grainy cell phone pics”, “out of focus”, “very low resolution”, or “provide an intersection address or complete street address”… What type of pictures and info, have you contributed?

    Instead of being thankful of simply being able to see a “Photo Gallery” of how bad the rain affected certain areas, you chose to bitch about how they weren’t provided in (your idea of) the perfect format?

    I simply cannot believe the mentality of some of the people, in Utah… Is your ignorance a ruse, or is it genuine?

      Perhaps Mr Rabbit and some others are just hopping through Utah and won’t stay for the next storm . I will so miss the complaints. NOT!!!!!!

    Thanks for your coverage today. Without it, I would have found myself in the car with my 80 year old Dad, who can barely walk & suffering from Alzheimer’s, going thru some of the worst flooding in the area — from Ivins to downtown St. George.

    Thanks again for the valuable public service today.

    I appreciate the photos, too, but there was no request for hunting down the missing information. I presume St. George News is in the business of providing information and sets the standards for what it will and won’t accept for publication, hence my request. Sorry if it’s asking too much.

    I agree with Dave Rabbitt and Dana (comments above). When we consider the huge
    amount of rain that all areas of Washington County received over the past 48 hours, I
    think the St. George News did a wonderful job of getting information out to the readers. Remember that a lot of these photo contributions were from ordinary citizens, not StGeoNews staff folks. I’ve lived here in the “greater St. Geo.” area for nine years now and I’ve come to realize that there are those in the overall community that will bitch and moan even when they don’t have anything real to bitch and moan about. Get over it and get a life, be appreciative that there are those who are willing to go out and report. This isn’t the L.A. TIMES, ORANGE CO. REGISTER or N.Y. TIMES staff, give them a word of thanks for doing the job they do in “little old river city” St. George.

      You’ve proved your point admirably. Idiots voting for idiots. At least it suggests a sense of unity among all. I just wish that the maven of decorum would restrain herself from the three-dots for four-letter words substitutions. It only gives some of us readers something to pay extra attention to!

    Thx for all the pics… BTW the video on the other article of the falls over the Bard were epic.

    Seems the Gunlock dam and likely Baker are overflowing, as the Santa Clara is kicking it up pretty well. Have pics will send if have the chance.

    When Gunlock overflows it is rather awesome… worth an hour or two hike to explore.. happens only every few years. Now, the Santa Clara will be rather higher for some time.

      Unfortunately, Gunlock is still pathetically low. I do also love when it overflows, but this time it just isn’t happening. 🙁

    My photos were taken with a Nikon digital camera and edited (cropped and glare removed). One picture appears twice, the first time blurred.

      OK, John – thank you – I’ll see if I can find the duplicate and remove it – we did inadvertently upload small versions, removed them and reloaded full size as posted. Thank you for sharing and chalk that up to a learning curve, please. 🙂

        Joyce, should photo remissions be left at “full-size,” ex: 8.0MB as opposed to being reduced to approx. 300 KB? (JPEG). Thanks.

    Joyce — sent those to Holly / Very dramatic shot from Valley view bridge included… water still going over Gunlock dam no doubt but much reduced from Y’day
