ST. GEORGE — Ciara Hamblin, 17, reigns as Miss St. George 2014 with duties to be humble, kind, loving, caring, ambitious, helpful, friendly, and to be the best version of herself there is.
The pageant is open to girls ages 14-18. The 2014 Miss St. George Royalty includes Hamblin as crowned princess, a Snow Canyon High School senior; first attendant Brittney Werner, a Pine View High School senior; second attendant Savanah Aplanalp, a Dixie High School senior; and Miss Congeniality Brooklynn Kauvaka, a Pine View High School junior.
This year saw 11 contestants in the pageant, the most competition of the last three to four years, Bailey said.
As the princess, Hamblin works to inspire young women to realize their self-worth and beauty.
“I actually have two platforms,” Hamblin said. “My first one is ‘A Smile and Wave Can Change Someones Day.’ Why? I have moved multiple times in my life and I cannot say how many times I wanted someone to just say hi to me,” she said.
Applying friendly behavior to everyone around is important, Hamblin said. She has schedules to go to schools to open students’ minds to the subject as well as encourage them on seat belt safety, which is her second platform.
Two of Hamblin’s friends died in a car accident who had not been wearing seat belts because the belts in the car were broken, she said.
“I have asked some car dealerships to donate seat belts for teens,” Hamblin said, “and to have them installed for free.”
As a part of the St. George Royalty, Hamblin’s important role is service. The Miss St. George Pageant is not connected with the Miss America Organization, Pageant Director Jill Bailey said.
The Royalty’s focus in the community is service, Bailey said. They serve businesses in the area at events including ribbon cuttings, the United States Navy Blue Angels’ Thunder Over Utah Airshow and various area festivals.
The royalty seeks to do service every month, Bailey said, and has focused the royalty pageant on recognizing the inner beauty and personal uniqueness rather than modeling on the physical appearance like most pageants.
“This isn’t a beauty pageant, but it is a scholarship pageant,” she said.
The crowned princess receives a $2,000 scholarship, which is donated by the city. Contestants who compete must have lived in St. George for six months, have a 3.5 grade-point average, and must have given at least 10 hours of community service, Hamblin said.
“I think the best part about being in St. George Royalty is not only about wearing a crown on your head, and a sash around you neck, but the people and the service that you get to tribute to your city,” the crowned princess said. “Every Sunday I have worked at the soup kitchen and love it just because of how eye opening it was; and when I found out that this pageant isn’t just a beauty pageant and that its an opportunity to help others and put a smile on peoples faces I just had to do it.”

This whole story is such a load of BS. Take a look around, people in Utah are overly concerned with looks. There are so many fake chests on the ladies in this town we could be named silicon valley! No one in this town looks past surface beauty to find out whats inside of people. If you looked past the beautiful people’s outward appearance you would find some very ugly things inside that they are trying to hide from getting out.
I call them MOLLY MORMONS. They all look the same, and are very non traditional. They go to church hiding their tattoos, do drugs & drink like all the other teenagers .YET WEAR TEMPLE GARMENTS. IT IS A JOKE.
In St George, a woman’s duties are to serve her man, have kids and do what the church tells her to do.
Come on Jocye. When are you going to do something about these two???

Joyce, maybe a separate page can be created where any comments that are deemed “not suitable for the sensitive” can be sent. That way, everyone can be as “obnoxious and annoying” as they want to be and those who choose to read it can just go to that section. And the “sensitive” can avoid it and stay w/in their bubble.
Joyce, who will be the opinion police? Munchie is correct, if you start picking and filtering the comments then you may as well just remove the section all together.
Many times the comments are inappropriate but many times they are right on and accurate.
Sometimes the delivery leaves something to be desired but all and all I enjoy all of the comments.
Sure, SSfreeze. This is a gauntlet I don’t need to run: Keep Koolaid and Bobber, slay Koolaid and Bobber, keep Koolaid and Bobber, slay Koolaid and Bobber. I trust they are able to self-moderate when I give them a nudge, they’ve done so in the past. That we allow a great deal of latitude is self-evident in our comment forums. That I will give a reminder from time to time that tone matters is something that, in my experience, is usually respected. Let’s give them an opportunity to govern themselves, shall we?

In America free speech is cherished. When the media attempts to please a particular group over another as has the Spectrum, it eventually leads to a complete loss of readers. And we all know the faithful in SG don’t pay for anything. So instead of threats maybe we should invite alternate views irregardless our beliefs.
Why don’t you just stop reading our comments? We do have a following of those who enjoy our commentary. Don’t get your secret magic undies in a wad about it.

I am the original bobber and I really enjoy reading koolaid’s comments. And I don’t enjoy most comments on here because they are either classless or dull. Koolaid is the genuine article.
And really only the dull-witted can’t enjoy some humor, especially at the expense of the area’s dominate cult/religion.
I agree with what your feelings and thought on this are. It really sucks living in a town where a religion controls everything and can whine to the media and get them to control what is and isn’t okay, that is assuming the editor and writers aren’t believers. Maybe the best way to keep the conversation open however, is not insulting people continually. There has to be a better way for all of the nonbelievers in SG to express the frustration that continues to grow with each new church that is built and every teen housewives dumb comment. In the name of cheese n rice.
I enjoy the crass humor, too. And I can take it as well as I dole it out.
Look pretty now girls, because in six years all the pills and the five kids are gonna take a toll. And don’t get mad at a couple of commenters just because they are observant. They are not the only two who see what goes on around here.
Our school is teaching the 7 Habits of Happy Kids….These girl love to lead….I am impressed….We learn to lead with love. I know how Miss Hamblin feel about wanting someone to just say Hi….That is what people should do, look people in the eye smile and say hello…The breakdown of our country is that we can’t love and be friendly. I agree with the women being inside out. Some act like they’re emotionally and mentally messed up.
I don’t know if the B-K’s have a following or not but they do have a right to comment, just like everyone else. Agree or disagree with them, that’s called a difference of opinion. Start editing the comments section and you might as well eliminate it.
What? A difference of opinion. Is that even permitted here in this part of the country. God forbid should we have freedom of speech and freedom of expressing our view points of this single minded dominated community. I enjoy reading Kool Aid and Bobber’s comments. I may or may not agree with them, but they are entertaining, sometimes more entertaining then the story. 😉

Ladybug has a point that sometimes the comments are more entertaining than the story. But what do I know. I’m just a member of the community with no right to an opinion.
Who will deny these pageants aren’t about having the appropriate name or connections or church positions or even the right color of skin? Wanna bet these four are ward members? The clue is the statement of recognizing their self worth (aka: worthiness)
Agreed. STG is biased and it is all about connections. It has gotten better but certain families always have the advantages. It is about your last name and how much time & $ you’ve donated to the church/community.
Though inane, useless and repetitive, the stupid comments from Koolaid and Bobber should be printed. I object to hostile, racist and hateful comments; they are not usually like that. Their comments are boring. “Worthy?” “Didn’t a bishop…?” “Dogs and horses…” Pick one. We can always count on their comments being the same, useless chatter.

Or did her “friends” keep secrets from their parents? Maybe her platform should be for teens to communicate with the parents… it could save a life or two!
I would have to agree…If we shut down a 2 then we should shut down the whole section. That would just mean that I would have to re-activate my facebook page to keep it real in this town. The comment is true…people in STG care way to much about the way they look and trying to be people they are not. Its like the Stepford Wives around here. If you don’t like what you read then don’t read the comments. Unless you have enough intestinal fortitude don’t say anything at all, you are opening yourself up to ridicule. God forbid you miss spell something that is worse than being LDS.
Occasionally I find Bobber and Koolaid’s remarks crass and unnecessary, but most of the time I enjoy reading their comments. It’s not that I always agree with what they are saying, but I can appreciate how they express their opinion with a sense of humor.
Congratulations on the pageant, ladies. I hope this experience makes for a beautiful memory.

These talented, caring young women have nothing to do with being a Mormon
or all looking the same. If you want to rag on the Mormon church, do it where it is appropriate and NOT at the expense of some fine young people who are trying to do good things with their life. SHAME ON YOU for treating them this way.
Remember how local news sources used to identify the wards the contestants were members of? Why was that necessary?
In Hildale, these girls probably would be prego with their 2nd or 3rd baby.
