Alzheimer’s, Dementia Society holds fundraiser to support patients of dementia

ST. GEORGE –The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society invites Southern Utah residents to participate in its annual “Walk to Support Our Local Grandparents” on Saturday at Tonaquint Park.

Donations and registration fees for the 3K walk will help support the many services the local society offers, including caregiver training and support groups, memory-loss prevention classes, and face-to-face caregiver consultations.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic that is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. The number of individuals living with the disease has rapidly increased in recent years with an estimated 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s.  An estimated 10 percent of Utah seniors suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

“There has never been a greater need for the citizens of Southern Utah to support the work of this organization,” said Patrick Sapio, a social worker who volunteers with the society to educate families about memory loss. “These funds will help us provide families the tools they need to better navigate these diseases.”

All of the funds raised at the event will assist the 4,000 Southern Utah residents living with various types of dementia. Following the walk and run, health fair booths and learning activities will provide information about how to help those with dementia.

“Southern Utah has a rich history of taking care of our neighbors,” said LuAnn Lundquist, executive president of the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society. “Our passionate volunteers work to take away some of the suffering that our seniors with dementia face every day.”

The walk is open to all, however donations are critically needed and always appreciated. How to register provided below.
