WASHINGTON COUNTY — In honor of Veterans Day and Native American Heritage Month, Native American Veterans Tuesday will be hosting a Veterans Day ceremony at the Shivwits Reservation and a cultural demonstration in Springdale.
Shivwits Reservation
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the public is invited to attend the Shivwits Band of Paiutes at the cemetery located on the Shivwits Reservation for a Veterans Day ceremony in honor of the fallen Native American veterans. The ceremony will include a gun salute, the playing of “Taps” and the Native American honor song, and the raising of the flag. The Daughters of the American Revolution will set up flags to mark the Native American veterans buried in the Shivwits cemetery.
Zion National Park
In honor of Native American Heritage Month, Pipe Springs National Monument Park Ranger Benn Pikyavit, who is also a Southern Paiute Tribal Member and Vietnam Veteran, will be leading the demonstration of the cultural significance and use of yucca outside the Zion Lodge, located in Zion National Park, on the lawn from noon to 2 p.m. For thousands of years local Native Americans have used yucca as a tool, weaving material and healing agent. This program will highlight the incredible variety of uses and traditions associated with yucca.
Don’t forget, all day Tuesday is National Park fee-free day for all in honor of Veterans Day.
