ST. GEORGE – The roadside along a segment of West Bloomington Drive South and the surrounding area in the Bloomington neighborhood of St. George was lit up Christmas Eve by thousands of luminaries, to the surprise and delight of residents.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Bloomington resident Brad Harr and his family and neighbors began to set paper bags with candles in them along the roadway that lit up the roadway after the sun set.
Harr said his family has set out luminaries before over the years, but after finding out that supplies were inexpensive this year, they ordered 3,000 paper bags and candles for the event and invited the neighborhood to participate.
“It’s lots of fun,” Harr said. “It’s a good way to get out and meet your neighbors.”
That was one of the motives in setting up the luminaries, he said, to provide a means of bringing the neighbors together.
“This is a great time of year to get to know each other better,” Harr said.
People from other neighborhoods noticed Harr and others setting up the luminaries and asked if it was a yearly event. Harr said he hoped so.
“It kinda blew us away,” neighbor Steve Sutton said. In the three years his family has lived in Bloomington, they’ve never seen such a display, he said.
“It’s pretty incredible,” Sutton said.
