ZION NATIONAL PARK — A Chinese man was carried out from Weeping Rock trailhead in Zion National Park Friday evening after he hurt his foot as a result of wearing improper footwear.
At approximately 7 p.m., Zion National Park Search and Rescue team, along with members of the Rockville-Springdale Fire Department, responded to a report of a man calling for help near Weeping Rock trailhead in Zion National Park, according to an email sent from Zion National Park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus.
After a short period of searching for him, rangers found him above the Hidden Canyon junction on East Rim Trail. The man was with his wife and son, and they all spoke little English. They had no flashlights for hiking in the dark and the son was not wearing a jacket.
The man suffered from a lower leg injury, possibly an ankle injury, possibly due to the fact that the man was not wearing appropriate footwear. He was wearing slip-on loafers, Baltrus wrote. Responders carried him out.
“I do not know exactly what happened to the man or exactly what the temp was,” Baltrus wrote. “But it was cold and we have signs out warning of icy conditions.”

I can see a city slicker tourist, afraid of baggage fees, doing something like this…start hiking in the beautiful canyon and get in over their head. He needs to be billed for the wear and tear on the good people who rescued his dumb butt.
I bet the tag on his loafers reads ‘Made In China’.

This is news? How desperate are you for something to write about. “Chinese man” really? This proves the amateur status of your reporters. Good thing he wasn’t Mexican or Black or for heaven sake Caucasian.
Was he actually Chinese? Or was he of Asian decent? Could have been worse, could have used the term “oriental” like most Utonians. I am going to assume that he was actually from China and not one of the neighboring Cantonese countries.

I agree with JAN: What on earth did the fact that he was Chinese have to do with the story? What is relevant is that he was a tourist who spoke little English. The world would be a lot better off if none of us categorized others by their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or sexual orientation. E Pluribus Unum, to coin a phrase.
Dear readers, the term Chinese denotes a nationality, I’m unfamiliar with it being used in a pejorative sense but apparently some of you see it as such? I wonder why? In this case, nationality of a tourist in one of our most-visited national parks is relevant to the story. No offense or disrespect to the injured man or the Chinese as a group is intended.

Don’t worry about the trolls sniveling and whining about his nationality. If they didn’t whine about that, they would find something else to whine about.
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this story, or headline, except for the “donning loafers,” part. “Donning would seem to suggest that he was in the process of putting them on, when he fell, rather than that he was already wearing them for the hike. I did get quite a chuckle over that.
But to the little people who want to turn everything into a racial discrimination situation, all I can say is GET A LIFE! Why don’t you find something productive to complain about.
“What on earth did the fact that he was Chinese have to do with the story?” I ask that very same question when the story mentions the person is LDS and the ward he or she is in. What does that have to do with the story? Why is the LDS and Ward thing included for stories but excluded when they commit crimes?

Oh my gosh, I find it peculiar that people are offended by a word like Chinese. We aren’t all the same race people. Look at the government for me you fill out. They all ask for your race!

I was interested to know that the man was Chinese. The article could have said “a visitor from abroad” or something like that and that would have been fine. But I also heard there was a nasty accident involving Chinese tourists up by Hildale last week. I think it’s interesting that Chinese tourists are having such a hard time around here lately. I wonder if this man was from the same group? That would make for a lousy trip to the United States.
According to the headline he was putting on his shoes at the time. Really? Or was he “wearing” them? A dictionary and a thesaurus would be a good investment here.
