ST. GEORGE – Traffic slowed to a crawl on Bluff Street in St. George Wednesday afternoon after five vehicles traveling northbound collided as a result of one vehicle following too closely.
“The vehicle that caused the accident was following too closely to the vehicle in front of it,” St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said. “That caused the car that got hit to run into the car in front of it, and that third vehicle hit the car in front of that one.”
A fifth vehicle, also following too closely, then ran into the back of the car that initially caused the accident.
Traffic in the northbound lane was slowed as emergency responders attended to the accident scene.
Damage was minimal to most of the vehicles involved, Despain said, and only a red Hyundai had to be towed from the scene. The other vehicles were driven to a nearby parking lot, where police officers sorted out the details.
The driver who initially caused the accident was cited for following too closely, and the driver of the fifth vehicle was also cited. No injuries were reported at the time of this publication.
The St. George Police Department and St. George Fire Department responded to the accident.

Here We Go…..
Hey, guess what? The Speed Limit there is 35 mph! Usually, the cars flying in from the South are clipping along at 45 to 55 mph! The drivers in this town are scary!
The truth of the matter is distracted driving destroys lives. Because driving is dangerous we all need to keep our attention on our driving and not be distracted by other things around us. Unless folks obey the traffic safety rules the roads are unsafe for all of us.
I love St. George and I have many relatives that live and drive there. I’ve lived in Nevada and California for years but spend half my time in Southern Utah. I really believe St. George area has by far, the worst drivers west of the Mississippi. The young ones are aggressive and distracted, most of the older ones – like me – drive okay but you have your Sunday drivers too. The SGPD needs to be more visible and issue many citations until these drivers get the message. This little valley has too many drivers with big egos and cell phones in their hands.
I agree that St George and surrounding areas have some aggressive, bad drivers. But almost worse are the s l o w, hold-up-traffic, elderly drivers / snowbirds. Most of them have no where to be and no time to be there, so their snails pace on the road is dangerous to all!!

This town fills up with way too many visitors coming to see grandma and grandpa during the holidays. Next year kids, treat them to the holidays in the bahama’s and go with them.
Driving is driving. This reminds me of college in California, 1 guy get rear ended and next thing ya know 4 or 5 do the same thing. San Francisco has this same problem do to the tight and narrow driveways. It’s always safer if you have one way only, then everyone knows before hand which way to enter. Or not.
