ST. GEORGE – The St. George community is rallying together in support of a young girl, Kycie Terry, who, after exhibiting flu-like symptoms, had to be unexpectedly flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City with complications related to diabetes. Kycie Terry, the 5-year-old daughter of Josh and Jamie Terry, complained of a headache on Jan. 25 and a stomachache the following day. After not recovering by Wednesday, Kycie’s parents took her to the doctor where she was given antibiotics for strep throat; but, instead of getting better, Kycie Terry’s condition continued to decline, her uncle Jace King said.
On Friday, Kycie Terry went to the emergency room where doctors drew blood and discovered a blood sugar level of 1,148 (milligrams per deciliter, or mg/dL), a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, King said.
Kycie Terry was then flown by airplane to Primary Children’s Hospital Friday night, King said, but complications ensued while en route from the airport to Primary Children’s by ambulance and she had a seizure. Her brain was swelling, he said. She had another seizure shortly after the first.
Though responders were able to get both the seizures and glucose levels under control, Kycie Terry has been unresponsive since, King said. An early MRI indicated the possibility of extensive damage to the brain stem, he said.
On Monday, a fundraising website was set up by friends of the Terry family to help raise money to offset the costs as well as to spread the word and support Kycie Terry in her fight.
Dani Prince, website co-founder and neighbor of the Terrys said that the response has been overwhelming. In addition to raising over $16,000 so far, messages of support and prayers have been coming in from both near and far.
“The comments have been amazing,” Prince said. “Complete strangers who don’t even know the family have been praying their hearts out. I feel like the whole world is praying for Kycie right now.”
Word of Kycie’s condition reached Jesse Shipp, father of Britton Shipp – the 16-year-old whose ATV accident on Nov. 1, 2014, left him in a coma – and Shipp reached out to the Terry family by phone, Prince said, to offer words of encouragement.
“Everyone wants to help,” Prince said. “They want to share love and support. I have so much hope for today.”
King said that Kycie Terry is showing a lot of little improvements and that she is fighting.
“She does little things that let them know she is still in there,” King said. “She is a tough girl.”
She has five brothers, King said, adding that it has made Kycie Terry strong to fight this.
Kycie Terry was scheduled for another MRI Tuesday morning and the family is hoping to see improvements and are continuing to pray for miracles.
