At about 10:25 a.m., a 63-year-old man driving a black Ford Expedition southbound on Bluff Street was moving to make a left-hand turn onto Main Street when he lost consciousness, St. George Police Sgt. Rich Triplett said.

“During that turn is when the passenger noticed the driver was unresponsive and grabbed the wheel and prevented them from going into oncoming traffic,” Triplett said. He identified the passenger as the driver’s wife.

The Ford Expedition ran into the curb and left the roadway, ultimately impacting two cars that were parked in the Black Diner parking lot, 1245 N. Main St. Neither parked car – a Subaru Legacy and a Honda Accord – was occupied at the time of the crash.

The man experiencing the medical episode did not have any visible injuries as a result of the accident, Triplett said. The man was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in order to determine what caused him to lose consciousness. The driver’s wife was also uninjured.

The Ford Expedition and Honda Accord had to be towed from the scene, both having sustained notable front-end damage. The Subaru Legacy received minor damage.

St. George Police and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
