Faith-based youth academy offers alternative education; STGnews Videocast

ADVERTORIAL / ST. GEORGE — Grade school is arguably the most impressionable time in a child’s life. While education obtained in public school may work for some, other children blossom under a more personalized curriculum.

Watch the video above play-arrow for a peek into Liberty Youth Academy.

Liberty Youth Academy is an LDS faith-based leadership academy aimed at helping each child realize their potential.

We really try to individualize and tailor the curriculum to the children,” Stephanie Dale, administrator and teacher at Liberty Youth Academy, said. “We celebrate their strengths, give them tools for their weaknesses, and because the pressure to perform is off, they rise quickly.”

Student classes are composed of preschool, kindergarten through third grade, and fourth grade through eighth grade.

Liberty is partnering with Gathering Families to add history, literature, music appreciation, science and art classes for high school aged students in the fall. Classes are open to homeschooled children and homeschool support co-op is available.

“I think that it’s important for the kids to interact with each other at the different ages,” Littia Sellers, a K-third grade teacher at Liberty, said. “There isn’t any bullying, they support each other.”

Holly Baker, one of many students at Liberty who transitioned there from public school, said it made a world of difference for her personal growth and acceptance.

“The biggest difference between Liberty and public school is that (at) public school … I did not feel loved, and I didn’t feel like anyone wanted me to be there, I was bullied,” Baker said. “But here, I feel like they want me to be here, and I do feel loved.”

The school is now taking enrollments for a summer program called “I Love America Camp” as well as for its fall 2015-2016 semester enrollment. Call 435-668-4804 to schedule a tour or to check availability

Education or indoctrination, that is the question.

    • AnotherReader May 14, 2015 at 5:47 pm

The nice thing is, you don’t have to go there if you don’t want to go there. For those that do, more power to them. If your regular comments here are any indication of your own formal education, you should seek a refund.

Every comment site like this has a super duper smart person that struggles with narcissism. Thanks for identifying yourself.

        • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 11:46 pm

So what are all the other private schools ran by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim groups doing? Teaching the kids to be atheists? Mormons aren’t the first to have “faith-based” schools. Your comment is irrelevant to the deeper issues of modern America. Get a bigger view of the social problems that need to be fixed here locally and in the U.S. — are you able to do that? Just asking.
$$$, poverty, and social fairness for educational opportunities are a local and national problem.

      • fun bag May 14, 2015 at 8:01 pm

They have to go bc their parents force it, utard

        • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 11:38 pm

FUN BAG, “Parents force it”… Really? You’ve seen this happening? You actually saw adult members of the LDS church being forced by their parents to pay tithing? I wouldn’t doubt that there are Mormon teenagers being forced to pay, but why do so many keep paying once they’re adults? Find better arguments. There’s more to it than that. PS, So how do you explain all the bible commandments to pay tithing: http://www.openbible.info/topics/paying_tithes
These were thousands of years BEFORE Mormons were around.
Or are you going to dodge that question too?

    • BIG GUY May 14, 2015 at 6:23 pm

Your referring to most of today’s ultra-liberal, politically correct universities, I presume.

      • Bender May 14, 2015 at 7:00 pm

Care to call out these any of these liberal snake pits by name BIG GUY?

      • RandyColton May 14, 2015 at 7:33 pm

I don’t think you understand the term “ultra-liberal” BIG GUY. The US educational system is ANYTHING BUT. I never could understand the right’s obsessive hatred for acedemia, perhaps it’s your own insecurities.(?)
Religion should be kept where it belongs, at home & in Church; it’s in the State’s interest to regulate these so called Faith b

      • Chris May 14, 2015 at 8:15 pm

At least, students of those institutions know the difference between “your” and “you’re.”

  • Bender May 14, 2015 at 4:42 pm

Mormon madrassa. Inbred curriculum. Hide from the world.
    .
On a brighter note, U.S. New and World Report just ranked Dixie and Snow Canyon HS 11th and 12th academically in Utah.

  • fun bag May 14, 2015 at 7:57 pm

Have to start the mormon-based conditioning (brain washing) at a young age. That way they’ll be more likely to pay the LDS corporation for their entire lives, because we’ll all know “the Lard” loves that money.

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 12:13 am

What organization does NOT “love money”? See my response to 42214 below.

  • izzymuse May 15, 2015 at 11:59 am

With tuition around $300 to $400 + dollars per month, most families in the area will never be able to even consider it. I’m all for competition in education, but the sad reality is that the children who are disabled or in lower income homes get excluded. Without a voucher program or other means, the privileged children have it good anyway.

    • fun bag May 15, 2015 at 12:37 pm

not fair that only the privileged children get indoctrinated with a kooky and false belief system…

      • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 12:07 am

FUN BAG, What religion do you think is NOT “kooky”? Based on what reality? I am seriously wondering.

        • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 9:44 am

Let’s see. A 19th century conman finds gold tablets in Ohio. Then an angel takes them after he translates the tablets into 17th century English. The garden of Eden was in Missouri? You’re right Izzy, nothing Kooky about that.

          • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 10:49 pm

I’ve got plenty of “ammo” for all religions. Did I say anything in defense of Mormonism? What about the Jews and their stories about Magic Moses? God writing on tablets? All the miracles and angels in the Old and New Testaments? What religion does NOT have “kooky” stories? Your fetish with Mormonism is boring. No religion stands on certainty. No scientist stands on certainty. are you a “born again” Christian? You didn’t answer my question: which religion is NOT kooky to you? Too scared to be open with your own claims?

    • 42214 May 15, 2015 at 10:08 pm

Maybe if the church didn’t take 10% of their money they could afford to send their kids to better private schools.

      • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 12:10 am

42214, What religion does NOT ask their members to “contribute” financially and or otherwise? Even secular and atheist organizations are constantly asking their members to contribute money and time for conventions and various membership “fees”. Enlighten me.

        • fun bag May 16, 2015 at 1:09 pm

not talking about other religions. We’re talking about the cult of mormonism

          • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 10:50 pm

Why not talk about all religions? You scared of your own “sacred cows” getting killed? Sacred cows make good hamburger. 😀

  • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 9:13 am

“Ask” for contributions? You mean ask as if you don’t that is your choice. You mean if you don’t “keep up” with your contributions you’re welcome in the Temple. Is that what you mead by “Ask”. Don’t sugarcoat it Izzy, you pay to play in the LDS world.

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 10:51 pm

You didn’t answer my question: which religion or organization does NOT require $$$? Man, you and FUN BAG are funny. Always spinning around. 🙂

      • fun bag May 16, 2015 at 11:40 pm

izzy, i think the mormon conditioning (brainwashing) in you is strong. It will take you many years to recover, the sooner u start the better…

        • izzymuse May 17, 2015 at 9:45 am

Your church never takes money from its members?

  • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 12:52 pm

Izzy, here’s more on your interpretation of “asking”. “It shall come to pass that all..shall observe this law, or thay shall not be found worthy to abide among you.” (D&C 119:5). Now that doesn’t sound like “asking” to me. Sounds like you pay or you don’t go to heaven. Please, Izzy, enlighten me as you say.

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 10:53 pm

I guess if you’re not answering my questions, I’ll play your game. **crickets****
(Your double standard debates are boring).

  • fun bag May 16, 2015 at 1:09 pm

izzy is trying to confuse and sidetrack the discussion. ahahahahhahaha 😀

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 11:01 pm

So who cares about Mormonism. My initial main points are about private schools, disabled children, and privileged families in the USA. Pass the bag of “blah, blah, blah” …. 😉

  • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 1:42 pm

I think Izzy is out of ammo

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 10:59 pm

I think 42214 is avoiding questions, seems scared to declare any claim for any positive faith or religious view for him/herself. What religion does NOT require its members to have faith on “claims” which have no physical evidence? Hmmm. Are you going to keep spinning and avoiding my questions? I’m not defending Mormons or any religion here. look at all my comments above. Have I said one thing in defense of Mormonism? You have no clue of my position on any religion.

      • fun bag May 16, 2015 at 11:35 pm

mormonism is unique because there’s still enough evidence left around from the early 19th century to positively prove the whole thing a fraud and lie. All the others are more difficult just bc of how old they are, and we have to live around and tolerate mormon BS, scams, and hypocrisy everyday, so it just begs to be discussed…

        • izzymuse May 17, 2015 at 8:32 am

So you believe Moses parted the Red Sea, Jesus walked on water and was resurrected, Muhammad rode on the back of a Pegasus etc. etc. (other religions are ok) simply because they’re too old to prove false? What evidence supports ANY religion? When you go to your born again church, what evidence do you have that your bible is from God?

  • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 10:09 pm

Izzy, where iz you? Need some enligtenment about the optional and descretionary tithing of the LSD faith. Tell me how it is the same as membership fees at conventions.

    • izzymuse May 16, 2015 at 11:31 pm

      I iz right here.
Where is you? Why you spinnin’ so dizzy?
“Mormons ar all going to hell!” Well, I guess everyone is going to hell. The Catholics teach that all “non-Catholics” are going to purgatory or hell if no one “bails” them out, All the evangelical Christians believe that they’re the only ones “saved”, all the devout Muslims teach that all the “infidels” are going to hell, the Jews believe that all the Christians are deceived by a man (Jesus) who was possessed by the devil (see Jewish site for other reasons Jews do not like Christ: http://www.aish.com/jw/s/48892792.html?tab=y)…etc. etc. How do you prove any religion true or untrue? But, of course you probably won’t answer that question either.

  • 42214 May 16, 2015 at 11:25 pm

Welcome back Iz. You post at 10:49, 10:50; 10:51, 10:53, and 10:59 and accuse me of not answering questions? Can’t get a word in edgewise. What is your question? You’ve bounced around like a amped up tweeker, As for being “scared to declare” something about religion? I think they’re all screwed up. Mormonism just seems to be a little more screwed up than the others, but make no mistake, we’d be better off without any of them. How’s that Iz?

    • izzymuse May 17, 2015 at 8:05 am

Are you going to be lazy and not answer each one directly? Must not be as important as you complain it is then. Lol.
Out of ammo? I’ve got plenty.

    • fun bag May 17, 2015 at 10:19 am

Izzy is raging mad. I think his head might explode… are u an RM, izzy?

      • izzymuse May 17, 2015 at 6:53 pm

You’re still commenting? I think we’re friends now. Let’s just go out for a beer. I figure we enjoy eachother’s company enough… Lol
        😀

  • 42214 May 17, 2015 at 9:15 am

Your problem isn’t ammo, your problem is you’re a lousy shot. You make my case. All religions are flawed and we would be better off without them.

    • izzymuse May 17, 2015 at 12:30 pm

      Have I argued otherwise?

  • 42214 May 17, 2015 at 9:58 am

It’s Sunday. I’ll have to continue this when I get home from church.

  • Simone May 17, 2015 at 10:50 am

So glad to see that this is a advertorial and not written by one of the staff writers. I especially loved last weeks Mother’s Day article in which the Mormon writer spent the majority of the article telling everyone how good other members of her “church” were and how the two mothers couldn’t relate to their kids instead of focusing on what they’ve accomplished in their own lives . As far as this advertorial goes, the fact that they charge a large amount of money to provide children with an education sickens me. If we want to make this country great again then focusing more on education (which creates opportunities, fosters creativity, and encourages people to become informed about the decisions they have to make among a whole list of other things) and less on money would be a good start.
