5 juveniles charged with assault following melée between 20 students

IRON COUNTY – Following a physical skirmish between a group of 20 Canyon View and Cedar High School students Friday, authorities are reminding parents to keep a close watch on their kids this summer.

At approximately 4:35 a.m., Iron County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an assault in progress near the Three Peaks Recreational area, located about 10 miles northwest of Cedar City, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press statement issued Friday.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found that a group of approximately 20 juveniles, from two separate camping groups, had been involved in an altercation, the statement said.

Not only had several assaults taken place, the statement said, a vehicle had also been damaged during the altercation after being hit with a baseball bat.

“Airsoft guns, baseball bats and a sword were taken as evidence from the scene,” the statement said.

Deputies learned the juveniles involved were students at Canyon View High School and Cedar High School, the statement said. However, the names of the students will not be released as they are all under the age of 18.

While no serious injuries requiring medical attention were reported, five of the juveniles are now facing assault-related charges.

As this report is published, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

“We are reminding parents to be aware of where your children are going and who they are with,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Summer time can be a dangerous time for youth and youth related activities”

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
