IRON COUNTY – The Iron County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday that a new scam has been circulating in Southern Utah related to online classified ads.
Individuals posting online ads to sell cars have been receiving generic emails, a press release from the Sheriff’s Office said. The emails ask for additional information about the car for sale as well as a car history report.
The would-be scammers ask the car seller to use a particular vehicle identification number reporting website, claiming it is less expensive to use than other, more popular websites.
While the websites the email recipients are being sent to appear to be legitimate, the press release said, the scammers may be directing them to that particular site in order to earn referral money through an affiliate program and have no interest in purchasing the car.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with people and businesses online.
“When it comes to purchasing car history reports online, or doing any other business online with unknown people, please be careful and use only reputable agencies,” the press release said.
