ST. GEORGE — The St. George Children’s Museum is partnering with the Liahona Children’s Foundation and Project Peanut Butter as a part of their global outreach initiative to help end childhood malnutrition in third world countries. The museum’s executive director, Mary Nell Lundquist, will be joining a team of volunteers in Ghana where children will be assessed for eligibility to enter the nutrition program.
Through Aug. 20, the museum is collecting donations of school supplies, money, soccer balls and hygiene kits to be sent to Ghana. The trip will commence Aug. 25 and run through Sept. 7. The team will be met in Ghana by local charity representatives.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to extend our efforts in child development on a global front,” Lundquist said. “Malnutrition can limit a child’s opportunities to learn and grow properly. Adding nutrient-dense foods to the diets of these children will give them a chance to flourish and grow both physically and neurologically.”
Partnering with other charities is important when reaching out internationally. Both the Liahona Children’s Foundation and Project Peanut Butter are great allies in the global effort to combat childhood hunger and malnutrition. It has been a busy and successful summer filled with classes, art and special guest visits for the children’s museum.
“The museum runs through a donation-based admission process. We recommend a three dollar donation per person per visit. This keeps the museum afloat and allows all members of the community access to our enriched, engaged learning environment,” Lundquist said. “We are excited to add a global component to our outreach efforts as summer ends.”
There will be a director’s report Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at the St. George Children’s Museum, upon Lundquist’s return from Ghana. The public is invited to attend.
