CEDAR CITY — The Cedar City Arts Council encourages individual artists and arts organizations to apply for its Artists Mini-Grants awards which may be used for anything from supplies to training, all with the goal of enhancing culture in Iron County.
Grant applications are due by Aug. 31 and should include samples of previous work if possible. For terms and conditions and application forms see the Arts Council’s Quick Grants Web page.
Those awarded grants may use the funds to purchase supplies or equipment, rent displays or performance venues, support mileage or registration costs to attend educational or training sessions, purchase promotional advertising or other needs as demonstrated in the grant application.
Past projects Mini-Grants have helped include educational workshops in creating jewelry, music for groups from children’s choirs to quartets, printing art collection books, equipment to improve photography for the Southern Utah Space Foundation educational series and bringing in artists for workshops to benefit local artists.
The Arts Council Grants Committee reviews the applications and is pleased, it said in its news release, to offer several grants each cycle. Members of the Arts Council help fund this project with their memberships to increase the artist offerings in the Cedar City area.
All of the artists receiving awards are committed to sharing their skills and creations to enhance the cultural atmosphere of Cedar City. Many of them will present in the upcoming socials presented by the Arts Council.
“As chair of the Cedar City Arts Council Artists’ Grant Program, I’ve had money on my mind lately,” Chair Mary Anne Anderson said. “I’ve thought back to a scoutmaster friend of mine who gave me an interesting perspective on the nature of problems. His philosophy was, ‘If it can be fixed with money, I’m relieved.’ He meant that broken equipment or a dented fender were easy to repair compared to a broken heart or dented faith.”
According to its news release, the Cedar City Arts Council is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the arts in Iron County. Its mission is to foster a thriving arts community in Iron County through advocacy, appreciation, education and support. The organization is completely volunteer-run, all of the funds the council receives through donations or memberships are used to help the arts thrive in the community.
