SANTA CLARA — Families and friends gathered with enthusiasm and spirit Thursday at Santa Clara City Hall for opening night of the city’s three-day Swiss Days celebration.
“Hello Santa Clara,” Mayor Rick Rosenberg shouted to the crowd who instantly bounced up in an unrehearsed wave crying “Hello Rick” right back.
The atmosphere was a lively one, filled with smiling faces out to launch the city’s yearly celebration of Swiss pioneers who settled the area in 1861 and its present day community of neighbors who pull together in trials and celebration alike with enthusiasm.
Evening celebrations have got to have food and Santa Clara firemen saw to it that Santa Clara had dinner Thursday. The city’s finest served up chicken and rice dishes from Santa Clara’s own Ka’ili’s restaurant and raised funds to buy needed new equipment for the Fire Department at the same time.
Local favorites, the Lawn Darts, filled the air with music and the mayor led a group on the Mayor’s Walk. The opening ceremony had its own pomp with color guard proudly presenting the flags.
Santa Clara Princess Ashley Grant and her attendants were joined by Miss Utah Krissia Beatty, recently back from the Miss America competition. The royalty welcomed and greeted those in attendance and helped with the affair.
Swiss Days continues Friday and Saturday with Saturday’s parade being the favorite, many said opening night. It starts at 9:30 a.m. running east on Santa Clara Drive from Chapel Street past the Town Hall where many will have enjoyed a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
Swiss Days weekend is jam-packed with free concerts, contests, shows, food and merchant vendors, a 5K run/walk and more – plenty to participate in, plenty to enjoy.
Catch some Santa Clara community pride this weekend with friends and family. Go Swiss! The party continues until 4 p.m. Saturday.
