IRON COUNTY – Two California men sought by authorities in Iron County Saturday have been located. One of the men was cited for assault.
The two men were found in a ravine near the area they ran from.
Area residents were alerted as authorities in Iron County began searching for the two men early Saturday afternoon in the New Harmony/Kanarraville area.
The men were involved in a late morning domestic dispute with a woman who was taking them to Salt Lake City but changed her mind mid-trip, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Clay Allred said.
Authorities were looking to question the men about a call they received at 10:38 a.m. from a witness who, Allred said, told police she watched one of the men push the female driver to the ground at the Interstate 15 northbound on-ramp at Exit 42.
When the driver was interviewed about the events leading up to UHP’s arrival, Allred said, she informed officers that she was taking the men to Salt Lake City to visit family but had changed her mind and wanted to go back to California.
“That’s what the whole dispute was about,” Allred said.
The woman has since left and headed back to California, he said.
An alert was issued to people in the surrounding area in case they saw someone suspicious looking in car windows in an attempt to steal a car and drive to Salt Lake City themselves, Allred said.
Derrick Batton, 27, of Riverside, California, was issued a class B misdemeanor citation for assault in connection with the incident and was released. The other man with him has been identified as Antwan Garrett, 23, also of Riverside, California. He was not charged in connection with the incident.
Both men are on parole in California, Allred said.
The two called someone to drive down from Salt Lake City and pick them up, and it was the arrival of their ride that brought them out of hiding.
People at a Texaco station saw them walking down the road, Allred said, and it was with the public’s help that the two were located.
Officers had no cause to take the men into custody, Allred said, so they were permitted to go on their way, though he said they may have trouble waiting for them back in California because they violated their parole.
Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Division of Wildlife Resources assisted in the search for the men.
