HURRICANE – Police arrested a 26-year-old man Wednesday on felony aggravated assault charges after he punched a man in Hurricane and allegedly threatened to stab him with a knife if he contacted authorities.
Officers responded to a report of an assault where a male complainant said Anthony Michael Heath had punched him in the face, causing damage to his nose and chipping his teeth, according to a probable cause statement filed by the Hurricane City Police Department in support of the arrest.
The man also told officers Heath then pulled a knife out and threatened to cut or stab him if he called police, the statement said.
When officers questioned Heath, he said that he didn’t have a knife on him, according to the probable cause statement, but stated he did punch the man.
When officers ran Heath’s information, they learned he had two active warrants for his arrest and that he had previously been convicted of a violent felony. He was then placed under arrest.
En route to the jail, another officer located a knife that belonged to Heath, the statement said, and the complainant was able to confirm the knife’s description.
Heath was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
He was charged with a third-degree felony for aggravated assault and a class A misdemeanor for unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon.
He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
